A guide to Dorset Ghosts at 50!

In 2019 it was the 50th anniversary of one of Dorset’s oldest books about Ghosts!

In 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first man on the moon and Concorde made its first successful test flight. Closer to home one of Dorset’s most prolific writers was carving out the origins of his legacy and putting pen to paper on what was to become a must-have publication about the mysterious side of the county.

Rodney Legg was born in Bournemouth in 1947 and was educated in Charminster. In 1968 he founded Dorset: The County Magazine, which today is better known as Dorset Life Magazine.

A guide to Dorset ghosts was published through the Dorset Publishing Co. and is one of the 125 books authored by Rodney on a variety of subjects related to Dorset. At the time of publishing, this book would have likely been the reader's first encounter with the screaming skull of Bettiscombe manor or the grey lady at Athelhampton hall.

Next time you are sifting through a pile of second-hand books, look out for the distinctive yellow cover of Rodney Legg’s much-loved guide to Dorset ghosts.
